Symptoms of MTHFR Mutations

As Seen From The Therapy Practice

Have you ever been so passionate about something that you annoy others around you by becoming a textbook of information about a topic?

This is how I feel about MTHFR mutations!! I will really try to hold back as it was difficult trying to decide what the most important research was to share!

Over the years, I began to ask questions in my intakes with my therapy clients because I was seeing pattern. I believe these questions are integral in understanding when to collaborate with a medical provider for holistically care for our mental and physical health . I am not a doctor and cannot give medical advice but encourage you to explore these with your provider if you have multiple symptoms listed above

If you are reading this and think that MTHFR mutations sounds like the "new catch all" you might be right!

So what is it? Essentially, according to the research, this mutation reduces our ability to create a protein that helps your body produce and properly utilize the B vitamin folate. This process is necessary to create new and healthy DNA...about ONE BILLION times per second. Thiis mutating, it can wreak havoc in our gut and many of our various organs over time .

When collaborating with medical providers, many clients are often taught to explore ways for their bodies to absorb the forms of folate found in food, the environmental triggers of their mutations, and about foods with synthetic, man-made, folic acid.

There are some great ways to get methylated forms of folate that your PCP may recommend such as Ritual and Renzo's Vitamins for kids as well as foods (that are mostly green) that are full of it! Many of my clients who received testing and were recommended methylfolate by their psychiatrist or PCP, note more concentration, less overstimulation, and better communication skills.

Lastly, and honestly, the hardest piece of information for many of us is that many of our vitamins and "enriched foods" have folic acid in them. It may be helpful with your PCP to see if these are safe for you!

If you are a mental health provider, I urge you to do additional research into this topic as I have seen it affect so many clients in various ways. It is our ethical duty to work inside of our scope but this means that we are compent enough to recognize when something medical is the underlying cause of anxiey, depression, or more serious mental health concerns and make the appropriate referrals.

There are some wonderful providers in this area with expertise on this topic that treat it every day. If you have several symptoms it may be beneficial for you to reach out to your healthcare provider.
